AUGUST 2007:

The Kennebunks Peace Department invites you to join Cindy Sheehan, Congressman Dennis Kucinich, Liam Madden, Dr. Dahlia Wasfi, Eugene Puryear, Retired Col. Ann Wright, Melida & Carlos Arredondo, Helga and Augustin Aguayo, Ashley Smith, Charlie Clements, Sally Breen, George Paz Martin, and Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney for a Rally and March for Peace Saturday, August 25, in Kennebunkport, Maine. Music will be provided by the by Indigo Girls, Emma's Revolution, Dave Rovics, Inanna, and Pat Scanlon & Band.

“This will be a convergence of anti-war, environmental, labor and social justice activists along with concerned citizens,” said Jamilla El-Shafei, the co-founder of the Kennebunks Peace Department and an organizer of the Saturday, August 25 Rally and March for Peace. "To break the cycle of endless war we need to draw attention to America's need for systemic change. Let us start a “revolution of values.’ ”

El-Shafei said the event has been timed to coincide with President George Bush’s scheduled vacation in Kennebunkport. “If the President is here then we will remind him that he cannot escape the consequences of his decisions and we will hold him accountable!” El-Shafei said. “If not, we will be sending a strong message to the country that ordinary citizens as well as activists from across the social justice spectrum want an end to the war. We want Congress to hear our call to end the war in anticipation of the debate on the President’s Supplemental Budget request scheduled for September.”

More than 2,000 people responded to the Kennebunks Peace Department’s call to action on July 1 during Russian President Vladimir V. Putin’s historic meeting with President Bush at the Bush family compound on Walker’s Point in Kennebunkport.

“We are expecting up to five times that number August 25,” said Patrick Scanlon, a member of Veterans For Peace and co-coordinator of the event. “The timing of this Rally and March has made it the mecca for the peace community this summer.”
